How to Correct I-94 Errors

By Michael H. Markovitch, Esq. on December, 11, 2024

Need to Correct Your I-94 Document?

With the switch to Simplified Arrival and no more passport stamps, CBP officers sometimes make mistakes when processing foreign visitors. Immigration lawyers often need to help fix these errors on I-94 records. Since passports no longer show an admission stamp, it’s important to check and keep track of your entry category and allowed stay time on the CBP website.

Steps to Correct Your I-94

  1. Review Your I-94:
Visit the CBP website to check your I-94 for errors such as incorrect names, incorrect dates, or travel history: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/home.

  2. Identify the Error:
Determine the type of error that needs correction. Common issues include:
    • Misspelled name,
    • Incorrect date of admission, or
    • Wrong visa classification.

  3. Gather Necessary Documents:
    Collect all relevant documents, including:
    • Your passport,
    • Visa,
    • Approval notices,
    • Travel tickets and itineraries, and
    • Any evidence showing the correct information.

  4. Contact CBP Deferred Inspection Sites or Ports of Entry:
Deferred inspection offices and some ports of entry can correct CBP errors. Find contact information and office locations on the CBP website at: https://www.cbp.gov/about/contact/ports/deferred-inspection-sites. Be prepared to provide documentation and explain the error.

  5. Use the Traveler Communication Center (TCC):
The TCC can handle some corrections via CBP’s “Ask a Question” webform.

Important Tips

  • Double-check all documents for accuracy and consistency before submission.
  • Keep copies of all correspondence and submitted documents.
  • Call an immigration attorney before visiting a CBP Deferred Inspections office.
